FRONTERA NATURAL
Fermoselle is located on the southwestern border of the Zamora region of Sayago , hemmed in by the river Duero , to the west and midday, and the Tormes, to the south, which converge in the area of Las Dos Aguas or Ambasaguas.
On the other shores remain Portugal and the province of Salamanca . Its best-known landscape is found next to these rivers, what they call here Arribes , formed by the riverside slopes that since time immemorial have been used for agriculture in terraces by the thermal bonanza that favors the escarpment and that has favored the cultivation of the vineyard and the olive tree.
In the tortuous topography of rocks, faults and cliffs, and on a knife of rocks, stands the town of Fermoselle.
Fermoselle enjoys a continental Mediterranean climate tempered by its lower altitude and because it is sheltered by the Duero and Tormes rivers. All these factors give rise to a microclimate characterized by milder extreme temperatures in the winter and summer seasons.
Rain is scarce and unevenly distributed. The condensation of the aqueous vapor only gives rise to relief rains and the clouds that arrive usually come from the Atlantic, pushed by the southwest winds, since the remaining clouds are usually stopped by the mountain ranges that cross their path, mainly by the mountain range Cantabrian and the Central system. On the other hand, storms tend to predominate in summer and snowfall or hail are not frequent. More frequent is the meteorological phenomenon of fog.
In the Arribes del Duero, the source rock from a geological point of view forms part of the Paleozoic Zócalo or Old Massif, made up in this case of igneous (granitic) rocks, as the majority materials, although there are also metamorphosed sedimentary rocks, mainly slates.
Eight hectares of own vineyards made up of small plots located in the Fermoselle area, especially on the hillside terraces.
We work our vineyards over 60 years old following the traditional practices of the old winegrowers of the area.
We are currently working on the recovery of 10 hectares. of terraces and walls on the slopes of the Duero and the Tormes, with a slope of more than 50% and walls over 4 meters high that challenge gravity. With a perfect exposure and an idyllic climate, the vines grow on parent granite rock caressed by the breeze from the river and the inexorable passage of time from those plots that we now recover and from which the best grapes on the Iberian Peninsula were obtained.
